Since 2008, Field of View Sports Photography has proudly worked with sporting clubs across Melbourne, capturing team photos, game day action, special events, grand final memories, and more.

Jo Fairy has been behind the camera for over 20 years and now has a team of photographers and graphic designers on staff to help capture and process all of the team photos and action taking place each week.

What makes great sports photography?

The emotion of the moment, the body in flight, the story of the game and the tension in the air.  Everything about a sports photography shoot is intense.  It’s in the moment. There can’t be a plan - everything just happens – and it’s split-second timing as to whether the camera shutter gets it, or the moment is lost – but there’s no time to worry about what you missed, there's other stuff going on – and it doesn’t stop until the final siren. But then… there’s the dejected looks from the losing team, the wow for the winners, the disbursement of the crowd, and the celebrations and commiserations that follow.

As Jo explains, “When I step onto the ground and the siren goes, it’s like a switch goes on in every person around the ground. It doesn’t matter whether it’s football, cricket, netball, baseball or soccer. The anticipation is palpable. The expectations are high. The nerves are raw. It might be Little League or the AFL, but the feelings are all on the same page. It’s a short journey of players and athletes bringing their best to the fore. Time seems to stand still while the focus is just on that green patch of grass, a ball, a bat, and a bunch of people all transfixed on a game of skill, some rules, the odd meat pie, and scraped knees."

"As a photographer, it’s not just about the action though. The team may have had a bad run of luck and suddenly, on the day, there’s a surge of elation and victory. The scores may be neck and neck. The crowd rises and falls in waves as scores are made. It’s a community of camaraderie. No one cares if it’s pouring rain or not. It’s more than a game – it’s family."

“I’m often asked what makes a great sports photographer,” says Jo. “Field of View Sports Photography is my baby, and it never ceases to amaze me when the perfect sports photo just happens. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of skill, and experience with the lens, getting the shutter speed right, and positioning yourself around the ground. There’s the mental and physical anticipation of being ready for a moment to happen – and knowing the game, the grounds and the rules. But it’s electric when you get that shot, that face, that outstretched muscle, that moment in time. It’s emotional, intense, and dramatic all at once.”

At Field of View Sports Photography, we just know what to look for, and we thrive on those majestic moments that (sometimes) only a great game-time shot can preserve.

That’s magical – and that’s why we love what we do!
